Had British not colonised India, it would be a superpower by now?

Legacy of India has traversed through diverse rulers bringing even more diversity in its demographics. The added heritage helped India build itself and flourish in economic activity, sourcing itself from the heart of its culture. The trade expansion it did with the Parsi community and Arab countries, the population expansion which happened through various Afghani and Muslim invasions, added to it’s labor and the unification done through periods added to its administrative capacity. However, things were different under the Britishers, who treated India in a Separatist manner. A colony to pillage upon and feed the kingdom in England.

The trade capabilities of India was immense, at a point tipping off over 20% world share. It’s culture was wide and dynamic. Immigration was not an issue unlike the current modern problems hitting the UK itself. The openness was marred by British exploitation in every field. High Taxation with restrictive cropping patterns limited majorly to opium, hit the Indian agricultural. The technology transfer was restrictive and prevented the Industries to grow. The first Indian cotton mill and steel plant took forever to be established, only at the behest of British Raj, which was only granted observing the growing need for their own corporation needs. The Indian ships and port facilities which were a maverick, especially the Calcutta Port, lost their glory post the British vessels restrictions, making it a pure British business. The import-export gymnastics done by the British to favour, drain the Indian raw material and sell the British finished goods, literally finished the Indian trade dynamism.

The “Lost Centuries” shrunk Indian Trade, spread poverty, put a hindrance to the Indian intellect and made it suffer. Post-Independence, Indian literacy rate have grown fast, poverty has been reduced massively, and the Indians are leading in the technology sector. The Indian community is filled in NASA, the top technology companies and driving the sector. Surely, if India had been ruled by it’s own people and not as a colony of an empire, we could have marched to a utopian land.
